The Savannah Art Association has been a vital part of the city’s cultural landscape for over a century, fostering creativity, collaboration, and community among local artists. With nearly 100 years of history, the association has served as a gathering place for artists of all backgrounds and skill levels, providing opportunities to exhibit work and connect through the shared language of art.

Timeline Highlights
1920
Savannah Art Association founded by Mrs. Mills B. Lane and fellow artists.
1920s
First exhibitions held in Mrs. Lane’s basement, later expanding to other community spaces.
1930s–40s
Partnered with local institutions to host exhibits and foster community art education.
1950s
Grew to become a cornerstone of Savannah’s cultural life, with membership expanding.
1970s–90s
Continued legacy of exhibits, workshops, and supporting both emerging and established artists.
2000s–Present
Membership thrives with diverse artists; SAA celebrates 100 years in 2020.

Mid-20th century
Opened the Gallery on Chippewa Square as a dedicated exhibition space in downtown Savannah. Members showcased their work there for many years.
2021
Transitioned away from a permanent gallery space, moving to online platforms and community-based exhibits to expand reach and flexibility.
