About Elsie Howington
We are excited to welcome Elsie Howington, Associate Professor and MFA Director at the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art at Georgia Southern University, as the awards juror for the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport Gallery Member Show! While all submitted works by SAA members are included in the exhibition, Elsie will bring her keen eye and decades of experience as an artist and educator to select the award winners. Her nationally and regionally exhibited work — transforming found imagery into striking non-representational paintings, monotypes, and sculptures — ensures an expert perspective on this year’s selections.

Juror's Notes | Artist's Best
The Artist’s Best exhibition awards were juried by Elsie Howington. Pieces were reviewed anonymously, and three prizes along with three honorable mentions were awarded. Here are the judge’s comments on the winning works.
First Place Winner
Rebecka Hess, Morning Ambiance
Exquisite brushwork, lush and juicy. I was struck by the scene and the interplay of warm and cool colors, as well as the confident speed of the strokes.
Third Place Winner
Jeanne Mallet, Chadwick
This struck me as a fitting portrait of a man deep in thought, poised to act. The textures and restrained color palette direct my eye to his face—a calm storm.
Honorable mention
Jessica Lloyd, Night Flight
An intriguing composition rich in symbolism, with a simple yet compelling color palette
Second Place Winner
Mary Ard, The Gift
I am drawn to the intimacy of the space as well as the light shed from the outside. The connection between the siblings is palpable.
Honorable Mention
Julia Wynn Safer, Fecund
This piece immediately caught my attention for its sci-fi approach to portraiture. As a pair, the works evoke the tension between self-image and imagination.
Honorable mention
Anait Vardanyan, Apple on the Carpet
A masterful and subtle use of light and color. It evokes the feeling of a southwestern, arid landscape just beyond the unseen window in the scene.
